Almost all software applications you install
using the default installation have been written to startup
when Windows starts. Unless you have sufficient memory installed
every program or application you install slows the other programs
down little by little to the point where they become sluggish
and unusable as they are all competing for system resources
simultaneously.
You can use MSCONFIG (Microsoft System Configuration
Utility) to monitor and halt programs from starting with the
Windows Startup and through the process of elimination determine
which applications are hogging resources and slowing your
machine. This is for determining what the problem is, not
curing it, although many people run their machines in Selective
Startup Mode without consequence.
For more information on this subject and
the the proper use of MSCONFIG please go
to Pacman's Portal an excellent
site that I used frequently while working as a Support Technician
for Gateway Computers.
